Human Rights and Disability

The Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) in keeping with its mandate to assess the working of the Equal Opportunity Act (the Act) hosted a workshop on October 14, 2015 on Human Rights and Disability, Implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, Trinidad.

The key note speaker for the event was Her Honour, Senator Kerry Ann Ifill, President of the Senate of Barbados. Other panellists included Mr. Richard Blewitt, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative; Ms. Sarah Briggs, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services, and the Chairman of the Equal Opportunity Commission, Mrs. Lynette Seebaran-Suite.

It should be noted that in July 2015, Trinidad and Tobago ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and is required to report to the United Nations its progress within two (2) years. Following the event, Her Honour, Senator Kerry Ann Ifill made a courtesy call on President of the Senate of Trinidad and Tobago, Senator Christine Kangaloo. She was accompanied by Mrs. Lynette Seeberan Suite, Chairman of the EOC and Dr. Beverly Beckles, Vice Chair.
